Preparing Your Dog, Cat, or Ferret for Travel abroad

If you’re planning to travel from the UK to the EU with your dog, cat, or ferret, your pet will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). This document has replaced the previous Great Britain–issued pet passport.

An AHC must be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV) within 10 days prior to your departure and is valid for up to four months of onward travel within the EU. Each certificate can cover up to five pets, and it is intended only for non-commercial travel.

To be eligible for an AHC, your pet must:

  • Have a readable microchip

  • Have a valid rabies vaccination given at least 21 days prior to your pets travel

For more detailed information about Animal Health Certificates and international pet travel requirements, please visit the UK Government’s official website.

We highly recommend booking your AHC appointment well in advance of your intended travel date—particularly during busy holiday periods—to ensure everything is completed on time.

For travel outside of the EU, different certification and health requirements apply, which vary depending on your destination country. Please do not hesitate to get in touch for further details.
